McCain salutes retiring Lane Cloudy Lane, a winner at both the Aintree and Cheltenham Festivals, has been retired after running in the John Smith's Fox Hunters' Chase on Thursday. Trainer Donald McCain decided to called time on the 13-year-old's career after he finished ninth in the amateur riders' Grand National, a race he had won 12 months earlier. McCain tweeted: "Cloudy Lane in one piece this morning, will now have a happy retirement, I owe him the world." Cloudy Lane's best placing in three attempts on the big steeplechase itself was sixth to Comply Or Die in 2008. His Cheltenham Festival success came in the 2007 Kim Muir Handicap Chase. Cloudy Lane won 12 of his 38 races and amassed over £235,000 in prize-money for his owner Trevor Hemmings.
