McManus upbeat despite Gold flop Owner JP McManus insisted today he was not too downhearted following First Gold`s defeat at Newbury yesterday.Impressive winner of the King George VI Chase last season and favourite for Gold Cup honours at Cheltenham in March, Francois Doumen`s star made his return to action over hurdles at the Berkshire track.But he proved a major disappointment and to settle for the third place behind Historic and Spendid.Speaking at Fairyhouse today, McManus said: 'At least he ran to the line and they feel he his better over fences. 'I wasn`t disappointed but obviously we would have been happier if had won.'But he did have a hard season last year and it can often take a race or two to get them back.'First Gold was eased out a point from 5-1 to 6-1 with Paddy Power for the Gold Cup and now shares favouritism with Irish hope Sackville.
