Having had plans for a potential Galway Plate bid scuppered after a fine run at Punchestown recently, trainer Noel Meade is hoping that Jesse Evans can make the most of a nice opportunity at Killarney on Monday.

Winner of his Beginners Chase at Ballybrit last season, all roads led back to the western venue for the nine-year-old son of So You Think.

However, after defying odds of 40/1 to finish third behind Majborough in a Grade 1 at Punchestown, Jesse Evans has been hit by the handicapper.

Nicely treated in the Grade 3 BoyleSports An Riocht Chase at Killarney, Meade is hopeful that the gelding can make the most of the opening presented: “Jesse Evans got 4lb for running the last day and I’m still sick so I decided I’d let him go to Killarney because he’s actually well in there.

“If he brings his A-game I hope he has a great chance. It looks a nice race for him.

“The plan all along was to go for the Plate but he’s gone to 148 now so I don’t know if that’s feasible or not.

“I don’t think he’s going to get anything for Monday, I think he can run free there basically.

“He seems in great form.”
