Review FAIRYHOUSE 28TH MAR

The Powers Gold Label Irish Grand National, carrying a massive prize-fund of E250,000, was won by the Martin Brassil's Numbersixvalverde, ridden by a certain Ruby Walsh.

Numbersixvalverde raced in mid division before making steady progress through the field to close on the leaders on the run for home.

At the last he was marginally second to Jack High, under Garrett Cotter.

However, Jack High hung left on the run-in and Walsh seized the opportunity to force Numbersixvalverde ahead close home.

The race proved a bitter-sweet win for the jockey, who was denying his father Ted a second win in Ireland's most valuable race.

Afterwards the jockey, who was completing a double on the day, reported 'I'm really disappointed to have beaten dad and Garrett but I'll take that win!'

The horse had already won this season's Thyestes Chase and Brassil later commented 'everything worked out well today. He was lucky not to get hampered by the fall of Native Sessions (suffered fatal injuries).'

He added 'the 3m5f trip really suits him and he has done us proud this season. Unfortunately his owner Bernard Carroll missed the race as he is on holidays in Portugal. The horse will himself receive a well deserved break now!'

Connections of the ill-fated Native Sessions did receive a measure of compensation when the horse's brother No Half Session claimed the handicap hurdle, compeleting a double for Paul Carberry.

The first three races saw narrow margin wins following thrilling battles under leading jockeys.

The opening McGarrell Reilly Homes Hurdle went to Noel Meade's Afistfullofdollars, a first win of the afternoon for Paul Carberry.

The winner was produced under a typically confident ride but Carberry needed to get serious on the seven year old from the second last flight to see off Bright Gas, under Barry Geraghty.

Carraig Blue, the well backed favourite in the race (5/2 - 2/1), was reported to have finished lame.

The Joe Molloy Bookmakers Hurdle saw another brilliant battle with Tiger Cry and David Casey, fighting off the challenge of Man About Town and Tony McCoy, by a short head.

The Sherry Fitzgerald Hurdle went to Willie Mullins' Major Vernon. Ruby Walsh was hard at work from the second last and, in a bobbing finish, prevailed by a short head from In Compliance and Barry Geraghty.

Elsewhere on the card, jockey Philip Carberry was seen to good effect on Healy's Pub, winner of the 2m6f handicap hurdle while Jessica Harrington's Strike Back landed the Stanley Macadam Novice Chase.
