Review LEOPARDSTOWN 27TH JAN

Sizing Europe leapt to the head of the Champion Hurdle market with a devastating performance at Leopardstown on Sunday.

Henry de Bromhead's charge blew away his rivals in great style in the AIG Europe Champion Hurdle with a stunning eight-length victory.

Andrew McNamara exuded confidence on the gelding as he took up the running before the second last.

He put his rivals to the sword soon after the flight and was just nudged out on the run-in to claim the Grade 1 prize.

'It's unreal, amazing - I'm stunned,' said a delighted de Bromhead. 'We have really concentrated on his schooling after the fall at Punchestown and it's really paying off.'

'I don't know if he should go,' joked the Waterford handler when asked about the Champion Hurdle.

'He ticked all the boxes today and it's a big sigh of relief. I've never had a Champion Hurdle contender before.

'He was a bit slow at the first down the back but just winged them after that and Andrew gave him a fantastic ride.

'We'll keep tipping away with him and try and look after him now. To beat those kind of horses like that is unbelievable.'

Bookmakers slashed his price for the Festival showpiece. Ladbrokes and Cashmans went 3/1 (from 8/1) after the race while most of the other firms offer 11/4 or 5/2.

Earlier on the card the Baileys Arkle had been robbed of some of its lustre when 6/5f Scotsirish crashed out at the fifth last.

Market rival Thyne Again (13/8) was left to dominate proceedings, cruising to a facile 15-length success over Gardasee.

'He was impressive today. Scotsirish falling made it easier and I would have liked to see him stand up and see what we have,' said winning trainer Liam Burke.

'I don't know about Cheltenham, I'll have to talk to the owners. My gut feeling is that I'm terrified of the place. He's had a problem with his leg before and the ground would want to be very safe.

'He could go for the Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse but we'll have to have a think as there is only one Cheltenham.'

Winning jockey Davy Russell completed a quick double when The Budgee was gifted success in the handicap chase.

Michael Hourigan juniors' charge looked held in fourth before the last but the final fence exits of Tailors Hall, Holly Tree and Marhaba Million presented him with the race.

Pomme Tiepy is a possible for the SunAlliance after an impressive victory in the Grade 2 Woodlands Park Novice Chase.

Ruby Walsh had the French-bred mare disputing throughout and she kicked on after a great leap two out.

A slight peck at the last failed to stop her momentum and she galloped on strongly to post a four-length margin over Kilcrea Castle.

'We'll look at the PJ Moriarty but that will probably be a bit soon. She was supposed to run in this race last week and then go for the Moriarty but with Naas being called off we've had to change plans,' said trainer Willie Mullins.

'I suppose we'll have to look at the SunAlliance with her but I'll have a look at the Irish program before I make my mind up. We'll see how she comes out of this and then see where she goes - if anywhere.'

Liskennett could also be set for Prestbury Park after a hard fought success in the Grade 2 Toshiba Novice Hurdle.

Niall Madden showed his strength aboard the mare as she held the late challenge of Siegemaster by a neck.

'She'll probably have an entry for the three-mile novice at Cheltenham. Three miles around Cheltenham would probably suit her and her mother won there,' said trainer Charles Byrnes.
