Review NAAS 23RD APR

A first career four-timer for jockey Fran Berry was the highlight of the day's racing at Naas today, with the Co Kildare rider combining with trainers Charlie Swan, John Oxx (twice) and Declan Gillespie for cumulative odds of 788/1.

Berry's opening winner for Oxx came in the competitive Thoroughbred County Race on Deyrnia, who held the challenge of Unique Pose by a length.

Deyrnia had raced in second before improving to lead two and a half furlongs out and stayed on well despite swishing her tail.

Afterwards Oxx reported 'I'm not worried about her swishing her tail as she is a tough and genuine sort. We may go for a handicap next, depending on her h'cap mark.'

Oxx's second winner was Shalapour, who got the better of a tight battle with Society Milliner, in the goracingatnaasracecourse.com maiden.

The pair raced together inside the final furlong before Shalapour battled best, getting his head in front close home.

Oxx later mentioned 'he's decent but may need to improve a little to make Grade class. He'll probably go for the Derby Trial at Leopardstown next month because there's no race for him at Punchestown next week!'

The absence of starting stalls throughout the day (due to heavy ground) proved a benefit to Charlie Swan's All Woman, who won the opening Naas Median Auction Maiden under a positive Fran Berry ride.

Berry jumped All Woman out smartly as the tape went back and made all for a 3 1/2l length success.

Swan later mentioned 'the winning and losing of the race was at the start where Fran was excellent, I'm delighted there were no stalls in operation!'

All Woman was carrying the colours of Swan's partner Carol Hyde, colours previously registered in Swan's grandmother name and in which Swan rode his first winner, on Final Assault in 1983.

Berry partnered Declan Gillespie's Decarl to win the concluding seven furlong handicap, the second leg of double for the trainer.

Gillespie had earlier saddled Lake Andre to win the Summer Barbeque Evenings Handicap, providing Damien Murphy, 21, with his 13th career success.

Trainer Mark Loughnane, formerly based in Thurles, has changed training premises in the last month and trained his first winner since moving to Trim, Co Meath, when Camargue won the Go Racing In Kildare Handicap.

Loughnane later reported 'I have over 30 horses in training at the moment and this is the start I was looking for; hopefully Camargue can win another few of these races.'

Trainer Harry Rogers was strong in his praise of jockey Pat Smullen following his Kilmannin's win in the mile (36-60) handicap.

The winner looked to have had a better chance of finishing last than first turning in, but found plenty inside the final two furlongs for a length win over Princess Dariyba.
