Review NAAS 15TH OCT

The best was left to last at Naas on Sunday with Noel Meade describing the bumper winner, Aran Concerto, as a 'potential Gold Cup horse'.

The Zaffaran gelding was the subject of glowing reports and was duly sent off a well-backed 11/10f.

Nina Carberry sent the five-year-old to the front early in the straight and he soon went clear. He could afford to ease down close home for a nine-length verdict.

'Take his name down because this could be the best horse I've ever had!' said Meade.

'He has been exciting us since the first day we worked him. I doubt he'll run in another bumper. He'll probably start over hurdles now and will go over fences next year. He has the potential to be a Gold Cup horse.'

Jazz Messenger initiated a brace for Meade when leaving behind a disappointing return over hurdles at Listowel to swoop on the outside and claim the Paddy Power October Handicap in impressive fashion.

'I thought he'd win,' said Meade. 'He always works well at home but just tends to miss hurdles. He's a classy animal on his day. He'll probably go back over hurdles now.'

Sina Cova had earlier proved a class act in the featured Ali Retza & Mamadi Soudavar EBF Garnet Stakes at Naas.

Peter Casey's charge stamped her authority on the Listed contest, running out a convincing two-and-a-half length winner from Cheyenne Star after hitting the lead early in the straight under Kevin Manning.

'She might not be finished for the year,' said Casey afterwards. 'She'll stay in training next year as she is getting better all the time.'

Liscanna flew home in the closing stages to land the Derrinstown Stud EBF Birdcatcher Nursery.

Wayne Lordan had his mount at the back in the early stages but she made up good ground to lead inside the final 100 yards and hold another finisher Out Of The Red by three-parts-of-a-length.

'I thought she'd win last time at Roscommon but she disappointed,' revealed winning trainer David Wachman. 'I always had this in my head for her. I'll put her away now and she'll run in stakes races next year.'

Tom Taaffe claimed the two hurdle contests on the card courtesy of War General and Finger On the Pulse.

Hotel Hilamar (4/7f) was a hotpot in the PDM Fencing Hurdle but couldn't find a way past the front-running War General in the closing stages, going down by four-and-a-half lengths.

'He's a lovely horse and has the stamp of a chaser,' Taaffe said of the winner. 'He'll probably go to Cheltenham next month and we'll stop with him then as he needs good ground. He'll come back for Fairyhouse and Punchestown and will go chasing in May.'

Finger Onthe Pulse stayed on well down the straight, after leading four out, to claim the Paddy and Ivy Barrett Memorial Handicap Hurdle by four-and-a-half lengths.

'He showed plenty of promise last year and summered well,' said Taaffe. 'He came back and done it well. He'll make a smashing chaser but hopefully there are a few more hurdles in him.'

Theann (8/11f) justified her short price in the Michael Bathe Memorial EBF Fillies Maiden when running out a convincing three-and-a-half-length winner.

Confuchias did it the hard way in the opening Tifrums EBF Maiden, making all for a cosy two-and-a-half length success over Nanotech.
