Review ROSCOMMON 11TH JUN

There were cheers of up Roscommon as Jerry Regan led in his Katcharto Lady, sporting the yellow and blue of his native county, after she had annihilated the rest of the field in the 1m 4f h'cap.

With Pat Smullen up, the in-foal (to Definite Article) mare easily beat La Rossa by 5L. Gamble of the contest, Scalini's (10/1 in the morning into 100/30) was a one-paced third, a further 2L back.

The Joanna Morgan-trained daughter of Victory Note and that good race-mare, Magical Lady, had shown improved form lately, winning two over flights, and off 42 on the level she went off 6/4 market-leader.

She is in again at Clonmel on Thursday and she will probably race on until the Galway Festival. Of course mares are not permitted to be raced after the 120th day of their pregnancy.

An official going description of firm before racing was changed to good to firm after the third race following rain and only for the cloud burst the meeting could have lost it's main attraction.

Sweet Wake got the go ahead to run in the Knockcroghery Hurdle after Noel Meade saw what the precipitation had done to the ground. The 1/3 shot did not disappoint.

Denis O'Regan's mount defeated Classic Croco by a fairly effortless 6L. Meade suggested after a contest completed in 3 minutes 34.9, 'he was entitled to win like that.

'He pulled something behind at Cheltenham in 2006 and this year he may have got there too soon and maybe even possibly needed the run too.

'He will have a break now and will be back hurdling next year. Despite the fact that he has disappointed some people along the way, I still think he is a very good horse.'

He may have been quite sweaty beforehand but Loughsider has obviously learned plenty in the opening two starts of his career (debuted on May 16th) as he displayed in the opener.

The Harry Rogers son of Docksider was dropping in trip from an initial attempt at a mile and quarter to seven furlongs here and under Chris Hayes he soon led.

His eleven opponents could never get to him, prompting Rogers to remark, 'seven furlongs suited but it probably wasn't a wonderful maiden.' Morning price 6/4 into 4/5, Romeo's On Fire was 5th.

It was a case of more of the same as regards tactics in the second, Chapelizod, on his first effort for Tom McCourt (previously with Liam McAteer), never seeing another rival to score by 2 1/2L.

Niall McCullagh did the steering on the 12/1 chance, his trainer saying of the comfortable victor, 'I had the dam so that is how I came to having his one.

'He had been working well and I just hope the handicapper doesn't go too hard on him.' Kevin Manning missed the ride on Dona Victoria here, feeling unwell after getting unseated leaving the stalls in the first.

Like Katcharto Lady, Millanymare, with a handicap rating of 104 over hurdles, successfully switched codes on better terms (she is an 86 over fences) in the h'cap chase.

Derrygowna Court was the one for money here (3/1 into 9/4) but she could only manage 12th as the Tony Martin-trained Ruby Walsh-ridden, Millyanymare did it in good style by 1 1/2L.

Mozamjer had caught many an eye at Punchestown last time and he fulfilled the promise shown there when taking the maiden hurdle for Dessie Hughes and Niki O'Shea.

Like Loughsider in the first, Mozamjer only got his first taste of racecourse action on May 23rd, and he has obviously progressed a lot in the interim.

Jimmy Coogan, on the mark with Dick Morris on the 3rd of June at Listowel, showed his outfit to be in good form when Mr Bones scored in the bumper in the hands of Denis Cullen.
