Merdeka Remains Favourite For Sunday's Troytown Chase

A total of eighteen horses remain on course for the williamhill.ie Troytown Chase following the announcement of the final declarations for the race this morning. Mister Top Notch is set to carry a top weight of 11st 10lbs for the three mile contest, and is rated a 14-1 chance by the sponsors to take home the €65,100 first prize.

The 6-1 favourite for the race is Merdeka, trained by Tom Taaffe, who won the race 12 months ago with Cane Brake.

Other notable entries include the Tony Martin trained Royal County Star, and the progressive Gazza's Girl from Jessica Harrington's yard.

The most notable absentees from the line-up include the 2003 Hennessy winner Strong Flow, and Noel Meade's Mattock Ranger, who was rated an 8-1 chance for the race prior to his defection

In other news it has been announced that the BBC will cover the race at Navan this Sunday. The race will be shown live on BBC 2 at 2.30pm.

Tony Kenny from the sponsors commented 'It looks like a really competitive race, and fingers crossed we have a great race this Sunday' Hie continued 'Merdeka has been relatively easy to back in recent days, but we still believe that he's a worthy favourite for the race.'

I'm from just outside Mullingar in Co Westmeath and I grew up around horses. Dad (trainer Robbie Burns) always had horses at home, so I was definitely born into the game. I would have always had a pony growing up and then I started riding the racehorses out around 10 or 11. I moved into pony racing around 14. I always wanted to be a jockey, that was always what was in my head. I had two good years pony racing that included a four-timer one day in Ardee. Pony racing was definitely a big help before I went to the track. It definitely sharpens your skills for the racetrack. That initial pony racing experience gives you a buzz to keep going and you just want to get out onto the racecourse proper and onto bigger things.
