Last month’s Scottish National-sixth Flash De Touzaine (13/2) reverted to calmer conditions in Ballinrobe’s McHale F5 Range Veterans Chase today, scoring for trainer Liz Doyle and providing jockey Donagh Meyler with a double.

The ten-year-old was third in the 2023 Scottish four-mile marathon and finished behind younger opponents at Ayr last month, but today reverted back to veteran-company, as he also dropped markedly in distance.

Racing prominently, Flash De Touzaine led from halfway and defeated Sargent Lightfoot by a length, to add to Meyler’s earlier win on the Noel Meade-trained Jesse Evans

Doyle revealed “I took a chance on the trip, because we really should have been running in the earlier Mayo National. I just wanted to run against more exposed horses.

“He’s not slow but just about got away with that distance (2m 3f 136yds) as the ground is quicker than I thought it would be, with not much rain.

“He jumped great and Donagh gets on well with him. He hasn’t got much mileage for a veteran, I haven’t over-raced him, and thought this was the race for him.”
