Michael O'Neill rides first winner on Minella Emperor Michael O'Neill rode his first winner under rules when displaying great composure aboard Minella Emperor to land the concluding Racing Again June 1st (Pro/Am) INH Flat Race at Kilbeggan. Leading for the first circuit, the Emmet Mullins trained gelding was headed by Crohan Lady over half-a-mile from home. O'Neill remained patient, as the latter was passed by debutant Stede Bonnet entering the home straight. Pushed along in third over 200 yards out, O'Neill went second over 100 yards out. Under a hands and heels ride, 9/4f Minella Emperor got back up close home to credit his young jockey with a memorable first success. O’Neill said: “He was really comfortable making it and he was very settled. Once I asked him the question he answered. “I own a transport company and I was late getting here because of work today. I ride out for Emmet Mullins five mornings a week and I really enjoy it. “A friend of mine called Gemma Mallon suggested I take part in it (Corinthian Challenge) and sure enough I went ahead and it was great fun. Emmet was very supportive as well. “I did a bit of amateur showjumping and the family would have been involved in showjumping as well. “It’s unbelievable. When I asked him I said ‘this might work’ and it just worked at the right time. I had a couple of practice runs and made a mess of them so I was happy with this one. It’s a great feeling. “Emmet picked him out at the sales, he liked him, and fair play he picked a winner. Hopefully he goes on to bigger things.” When asked about celebrations he added:- “I don’t drink so I’ll go home to the family and have dinner.”
