Miss Gherkin delights Griffin in Ballinrobe Miss Gherkin (5/2) won going right away in the Monroe's Live John & Margaret Monroe Memorial Mares Handicap Hurdle over the extended two-miles in Ballinrobe. Fratas and Dame Rapide were the two tussling at the front over the last with Miss Gherkin in third under Tiernan Power Roche. Fratas soon saw off Dame Rapide, however Power Roche gathered Miss Gherkin together and she shot past Fratas in the closing stages. From there she scooted in by a widening seven lengths from the 9/4 favourite. Eoin Griffin said: “She did it well, she improved a little bit from the last day. “I’m delighted to get a win for Maurice (Sheehy, owner). He was with me when I was more or less starting off and had some very well-bred mares with me years ago. “She just came to me a couple of months back and I’m delighted to get a win for him. “She loves that good ground and it was pretty straightforward. She’s won a couple of races before, so we knew she had ability and she loves that proper good ground. “I’m sure the handicapper is going to have his say, but she has a couple of entries at the weekend so we’ll see what happens. “She has a chase mark as well, but we’ll stay hurdling for the time being and go from there then.” Additional reporting by Gary Carson
