Noble Mission suffered a heartbreaking reverse in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

James Doyle gave the Lady Cecil-trained five-year-old another tremendous ride from the front and looked all set to claim a second Group One on the bounce as he held a healthy advantage a furlong and a half out, but he found the petrol tank emptying as they headed for the line.

The Pascal Bary-trained Spiritjim got up to spoil the party for Frankel's brother in the shadow of the post, with Siljan's Saga a close third.

Noble Mission was stepping up to a mile and a half after his victory in the extended 10-furlong Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh, and the Khalid Abullah-owned entire had set just steady fractions through the early stages before quickening matters half a mile from home.
