Monastere makes breakthrough for Thornton Monastere built on a big run at Fairyhouse last time when opening his account tonight, in the apprentice handicap. The Karl Thornton-trained gelding had been runner-up here last month and went one better despite going to post a 20/1 shot. Jack Cleary was soon in front on his mount and the Kodiac gelding responded well when asked for an effort early in the straight. He kept on well in the closing stages to post a length-and-three-quarter victory over Whatswrongnow. “He came forward from the last day and he still doesn’t know how to sprint, as such,” said Thornton. “He hasn’t got much mileage and could improve again. “We’ll look for something similar and see how we go from there.”
