Moon shines in rain

Darryll Holland was smiling in the rain as the third day of Glorious Goodwood got off to a wet start this afternoon.

A downpour had racegoers diving for cover but Holland braved the conditions on 20-1 shot Mauri Moon in the seven-furlong Oak Tree Stakes, sending his mount to the front from the start.

And the jockey`s enterprise paid off as his filly repelled the strong late challenge of 9-2 favourite Sheppard`s Watch to score by a neck.

'She`s a filly who has run over a variety of trips from six furlongs to a mile and a quarter and pulls very hard,' the rider said.

'But today I popped her in front, she settled and stayed on well,' added Holland, who believes the rain has changed ground conditions, saying: 'I think the ground has gone to good.'

The going was changed officially from good to firm - firm in places, to good to firm - good in places afterwards.

Trainer Geoff Wragg was not expecting this victory, saying: 'I didn`t think seven furlongs was her trip but I had to run her in something and if she had been placed I would have been delighted.'
