More Goodwood joy for Hannon and Hughes Wentworth finally got off the mark for the season with a decisive victory in the Betfred Mile at Goodwood. Providing a double on the day for Richard Hughes and Richard Hannon, the winner (6/1) got a split with a furlong and a half to run and powered home to the line. Henry Candy's Cape Peron (5/1 favourite) ran a fine race in second, with Saeed Bin Suroor's Sandagiyr (25/1) running on for third place. Fourth was the in-form Galician (11/1) for Mark Johnston, who also had the fifth home in the form of Es Que Love. Hannon may have had plenty of success at Goodwood but this was the first time he had claimed the ultra-competitive handicap. He said: "This horse has been a little bit unlucky in his races really. A mile's his trip and he's a pretty good horse. "I think he's up to a Listed race now." Hughes felt the rain that had fallen at the track earlier in the day had certainly aided his mount. He said: "That rain this morning definitely made a difference to him. "I went to Ascot full of confidence, I jumped him out and settled him, then all of a sudden I'm 15 lengths off the leaders and not going. It was the same at Sandown, I bullied him to go and he went but (felt) the consequences later on." Henry Candy said of Cape Peron: "I'm not sure he would have won, Dane (O'Neil) thinks otherwise, but he could have done with slightly easier ground. I told Richard (Hannon) that they are two Group horses masquerading as handicappers."
