Mr Springer in great form

Mr Springer followed up on his Downpatrick success with a facile victory in Kilbeggan’s three mile one furlong handicap chase with Ben Dalton in the saddle.

The winner hacked up by ten lengths for 74-year-old northern trainer Harry Smyth who couldn’t make it to Kilbeggan as he was suffering with back trouble.

Co Antrim owner Shelley Boyle’s father Norman Boyle said: “We only found out at 11am that he was getting into the race so panic was on to get down. It was a three-and-a-half hour drive down.

“He has had a bit of leg trouble and came back after two years away from the racecourse to win at Downpatrick. He has come on for that run there.”

Dalton sent the eleven-year-old gelding to the front three out and he pulled clear to land the spoils at 14/1. That Beats Banaher saw money in the morning from 33/1 to 20/1 and took second spot with Ah Ya Boy Ya in third at 16/1. Guts For Garters failed to reward on course favourite backers (4/1 – 10/3) when coming home seventh for Michael Hourigan and Davy Russell.
