Joseph O'Brien 's Mr Tony in first-time blinkers, wore down Ella's Gold at the end of seven furlongs in the nursery that got Gowran Park's fixture under way. Canon Law soon took the field along, but was passed outside the '2' pole by a tracking Ella's Gold with Mr Tony nicely in touch in behind.

Ella's Gold kept finding on the heavy ground for Robbie Colgan, but Mr Tony was the danger racing into the final furlong as he got a scent of victory in second.

He was driven home by title-leader Dylan Browne McMonagle as the pair got the measure of Ella's Gold with the post looming.

The 11/4 favourite obliged by a neck from the 4/1 runner-up with Bullet Bourbon a length and a-quarter away in third at 11/2 (from double that price in the morning).

This was Mr Tony's fifth outing with a best previous finish of fourth in Bellewstown at the start of the month.

Browne McMonagle said: “He was good and tough, and is a horse that is improving with racing.

“He had a nice run the last day in Bellewstown and, once the penny dropped in the last furlong, he came home well.

“The headgear today for the first time was definitely a big benefit as he travelled today and, although he was coming back a furlong, he sharpened up plenty.

“He was good and tough when I needed him.

“The conditions are very tough, so you could nearly add on a furlong for whatever trip it is today. Thankfully, he got through it good.”
