Murphy making waves Down Under Irish apprentice Oisin Murphy has extended his profitable stay with Australian trainer Danny O’Brien Down Under following a double at Geelong today. Murphy, who arrived in Australia in November, has seen his reputation grow since gaining his first winner on the O’Brien-trained Settlers Way at Moonee Valley on December 28th. He then followed that up with victory in the prestigious Bagot Handicap on Outback Joe at the turn of the year, which saw trainer Nigel Blackiston declare him a future star. A double at Geelong on Wednesday took his tally to seven wins from 37 rides and has led to the likes O’Brien and Blackiston eulogising about his potential. “It’s been great so far and I’m learning a lot,” Murphy told Racing Victoria. “It’s very different but it’s been a great experience. “Danny O’Brien has been very good to me, so has Nigel Blackiston and it’s great to be learning new things and riding at different tracks against different jockeys. “I’d love to come back and hopefully it will happen. It’s been great so far and with a little bit of luck you might see me again this time next year.” Murphy, who rides for Andrew Balding in Britain, was due to fly back at the end of January but will now remain until February 16th. The barnstorming win by Cadel's Gold today presented Murphy with his first Australian double after having scored early on Alfa Sentura for Danny O'Brien. His win today at Geelong was the second career double for Murphy, who rode a double at Chepstow last year.
However, Murphy also rode a quartet of winners at Ayr, including the Ayr Gold Cup, and a treble at Doncaster.
As well as his seven wins under O’Brien, he has also ridden 41 winners in the Britain. Paddy Power Bookmakers have issued a number of Special bets relating to Murphy: 1/5 To be Champion Apprentice in 2014; 16/1 to be Champion UK Flat Jockey in next 3 years; 20/1 to be the next stable jockey at Ballydoyle; 50/1 to win the 2014 Melbourne Cup.
