Murtagh aiming for fourth win in Epsom Derby

Johnny Murtagh is convinced Jan Vermeer, his mount in the Investec Derby, is the ideal type for Epsom.

Murtagh is aiming for a fourth win in the blue riband and is bullish about the chances of the Aidan O'Brien-trained favourite, who leapt into the Classic picture when winning the Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh just two weeks ago.

"I think he's the ideal horse for Epsom as he seems to have everything," said Murtagh.

"He has speed, stamina and good balance, so I'm quietly confident he's going to run a huge race.

"He's a very straightforward horse and has a good temperament, I think he'd go on most ground.

"He's never run over a mile and a half yet so we don't quite know (if he stays), but the way he travels and relaxes in his races will give him every chance."

Colm O'Donoghue teams up with the O'Brien second string Midas Touch, who won the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown in good style.

"I hope he has a live chance. The trial he won at Leopardstown has always been a very good one," said O'Donoghue.

"He did it workmanlike, but he did a very good time, so hopefully he has come forward from the run and will run a good race."

Frankie Dettori believes Rewilding has the right credentials to be a major player.

Rewilding only joined rookie trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni from Andre Fabre's French stable in the spring, but burst on to the scene when winning a trial at Goodwood.

"One thing is for sure, he stays and he's very laid-back so he's a nice horse to have for Epsom," said Dettori.
