John Ryan followed up his win in this contest last year with The Dara Man, when My Gaffer adapted similar tactics to land the John ‘Chucky’ Dunne Memorial Handicap Chase at Kilbeggan.

Danny Mullins went pillar to post on the 13/2 victor, but backers and connections of the pursuing Clonshire River were given hope when My Gaffer wasn't as quick as he was elsewhere, over the usual second last.

However, coming around the bypassed final fence he had it in safe keeping, and eventually prevailed by fourteen lengths. Tullybeg (unseated rider) and Foxy Girl and Big Stage fell, doing some of their rivals no favours, but My Gaffer stayed out of trouble up front to win well.

“I’m delighted with that. He’s not over big and hopefully the handicapper isn’t too hard on him,” said Ryan.

“He gave him a lovely ride. He’s in great form and he’s a well-bred horse.

“He’s a smashing horse, a grand horse to have, and there’s more left in him, he’s only seven.

“We’ll probably run him over hurdles in Listowel, there is a race in Killarney for him as well.

“He goes on soft ground as well. He’s a Malinas, they are good horses, and he’s out of a Supreme Leader mare so he’s bred to go on soft. He’ll go through the winter.”

Barry Connell, trainer of Slane Hill reported to the Clerk of Scales that his charge burst a blood vessel. This was subsequently confirmed by an Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer.
