Newbury Option For Briareus

Andrew Balding hopes Ladbroke Handicap Hurdle disappointment Briareus can make amends in the totesport Trophy Hurdle at Newbury on February 11.

The highly-rated six-year-old put up a lacklustre performance last weekend when he finished 13th behind the Martin Pipe-trained Desert Air.

'We weren´t sure about the ground for him but the owners decided to take a chance, knowing that they had nothing to lose if he didn´t handle it, and it didn´t work out,' remarked the Kingsclere handler.

'If the going is better, then we will have to look at Newbury for him because there aren´t many options for a horse like him who is out of his novice season but lacking in hurdling experience.

'Hopefully the big field and fast pace ought to suit him.'
