Newcastle inspect but confident of racing

Newcastle's meeting on Friday is subject to an 8am precautionary inspection on raceday morning.

Clerk of the course James Armstrong is taking no chances in case there is a sharper-than-expected overnight frost.

The going is currently heavy, soft in places, with temperatures having dipped to minus 1C on Thursday morning.

Armstrong tweeted: "Precautionary inspection 8am raceday in case temperatures drop below forecast of 0c."

A later tweet read: "Providing forecast is correct, I do not foresee any problems. Ideally no more rain and plus temperatures will ensure racing goes ahead."
