Day two of Newmarket’s July Festival takes place on Friday and there’s a thoroughly competitive seven-race card to look forward to.

The big race of the day is the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes, which is open to fillies and mares aged three or older.

Run over a straight mile on the July Course, some very smart horses have won this race in the past and the trends suggest three and four-year-olds have the edge in recent years.

A field of eight has been declared and the Aidan O’Brien trained January heads the market at time of writing. Our expert has assessed the chances of all the runners and picked out two who are the most likely candidates.

  • Duke Of Cambridge form to the fore

Nine of the last 10 winners of the Falmouth were previously seen at Royal Ascot, with six having run in the Coronation Stakes and the other three in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes. It’s the form of the latter race which could hold the key this year.

January finished third in the Coronation Stakes last time out and may well progress again, but that form probably leaves her with a bit to find. That being said, it’s always unwise to rule out the very dangerous Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien combination.

Atsila remains lightly raced and actually beat the Coronation Stakes winner in a Group 3 earlier on in the season. She would have learnt plenty when seventh in the Irish 1000 Guineas last time out, where she finished in front of January.

Running Lion is a threat on her best form, but she was well beaten by Crimson Advocate and Cinderella’s Dream in the Duke Of Cambridge. Elmalka has failed to win since springing a surprise in the 2024 1000 Guineas and is probably best watched here.

Elwateen was a fair fourth in the Guineas and didn’t get home, despite finishing a respectable fourth in the Oaks. She’s not completely out of it, but she does need to improve in order to pose a serious threat. German raider Lady Ilze is an unknown quantity but looks a little out of her depth.

    Advocating for Crimson

John & Thady Gosden have a good opportunity to strike back in their ding dong battle with Aidan O’Brien for the trainers’ title, as CRIMSON ADVOCATE looks like the one to beat. This daughter of Nyquist won the Queen Mary as a two-year-old and has been rejuvenated by the step up to a mile.

Beaten by a nose in Listed company on seasonal debut, she returned to winning ways with an equally narrow success at Goodwood after that.

It was a career-best performance at Royal Ascot last time out as James McDonald delivered her with a well-timed late run to score by just shy of two lengths.

It’s difficult to see how runner-up Cinderella’s Dream can reverse the form and a similar performance is likely to provide a similar result.

Cinderella’s Dream won’t be far away

Charlie Appleby has maintained a very healthy strike-rate of 36 per cent at Newmarket’s July Course over the last five seasons and is rarely far away from the winners’ enclosure here. He runs the talented CINDERELLA’S DREAM.

It’s possible that she’s better over further, having won a Grade 1 in the US over an extended 1m1f last season. Her impressive defeat of Elmalka in a Group 2 on the Rowley Mile meant that she went off favourite for the Duke Of Cambridge, but Crimson Advocate was too good for her there.

If that rival underperforms here, Cinderella’s Dream will be there to pick up the pieces and she won’t be far away come the business end of the race.
