O'Brien Strikes At Newbury Aidan O'Brien launched a successful raid on Newbury yesterday afternoon with two winners from as many runners, including in the feature European Breeders Fund Chalice Stakes. That Listed event went the way of Fermion, a daughter of Sadler's Wells who readily overhauled the heavily-backed Reunite (4-6) when getting daylight inside the final furlong.Colm O'Donoghue's mount, 14-1, was trying the mile-and-a-half trip for the first time and got every yard to come home with one and a quarter lengths to spare over the Frankie Dettori-ridden runner-up.The rider did, however, incur a one-day suspension (August 17) for using his whip without giving his mount time to respond inside the final furlong. The trainer and jockey had struck in facile fashion earlier on the card as Astronomer Royal (4-7) got off the mark in the First Great Western European Breeders Fund Maiden Stakes. The once-raced Danzig colt swerved rather dramatically towards the far rail in the closing stages but the race was already in safe keeping and he was good value for his two-and-a-half-length call over Maker's Mark.(C) PA Sport
