Claude (10s — 17/2) gave trainer Sarah O'Connell a first success for owner Michael Ryan today, having landed Cork's Friends Of Castlemagner LGFA Rated Novice Chase under jockey Aidan Kelly.

Ryan's homebred grey son of Caravaggio was disputing the lead when jumping badly right at the final fence, almost unseating Kelly, but regained momentum to score by three lengths from Moylussa .

Tallow, Co Waterford-based O'Connell, with her sixth success, commented “that's his first win for me and he got a fantastic ride from Aidan. He was unlucky at Killarney the last day as everything went wrong from the start and it was over after two fences. He put that behind him and, after his mistake at the last, had the luck on his side today.

“Joseph (O'Brien, previous trainer) had done a fantastic job with him but he had a high rating over hurdles which wasn't reflective of his level of ability, but has worked back down. He'll handle winter ground and it is fantastic to get a winner for Michael Ryan.”
