Oaks still the aim for Zannda

Dermot Weld still believes he has a Classic filly on his hands even though Zannda was beaten by Jazzi Top in the Tweenhills Stallions Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket on Sunday.

The last two winners of this race have gone on to win the Epsom Oaks in Talent and Taghrooda, but the 5-2 winner is not certain to tread the same path.

It was quite a messy race, with fillies heading off in all directions going into the dip, but Frankie Dettori made a beeline for the new cutaway to score.

Zannda was a persistent challenger, with Namhroodah also on the premises, but John Gosden's filly pulled stylishly clear for a length-and-a-half win from the 15-8 favourite Zannda..

Gosden said: "This (10 furlongs) looks like her perfect trip right now. The second looks a nice filly and it was a good quality race, and she quickened well.

"Her half-sister (Izzi Top) was third in the Oaks, but her best trip was a mile and a quarter. We could not be more pleased with her and Frankie felt the trip was spot-on. We'll keep all options open."

Weld said of Zannda, the winner of a Leopardstown maiden last month in the colours of the Aga Khan: "It looked like she was feeling the ground a bit, but she was coming back at them in the closing stages and is crying out for a mile and a half.

"A bit of ease in the ground would suit her ideally so we'll see what happens and keep our options open, but she is still very much a filly we are looking at running in an Oaks. The ground is normally quite quick as Ascot so that wouldn't suit her."
