Billy Lee completed a 43/1 double at Fairyhouse as Orchidaceae swooped late on the stand side to land the Fairy Nights Handicap.

The daughter of Churchill, trained by Andy Oliver for Team Valor, won twice as a juvenile last year including a maiden on Guineas weekend at the Curragh and was returning to form following two outings this term. Kilmood Susan made a bold bid from the front in this seven-furlong event but was swamped inside the final furlong with Orchidaceae coming home best on the nearside.

The well-backed 3/1 joint favourite beat Sir Jeremy by three-quarters of a length with Glyndwr a further length back in third.

Lee was completing a quick double having partnered Germanese (10/1) to take the previous maiden.

Oliver said, “We ran her in the Guineas Trial first time out this season and she ran a solid enough race and took a blow. She then ran flat and it turned out she was in season.

“We were hopeful she was in good shape coming into this, although we were quite concerned when the rain came.

“She settled well and picked up well. Her attitude was good, and Billy gave her a lovely ride.

“We’ll see where we go in handicaps and black type will be the ultimate aim.”
