On The Way Out (5/1) took the feature at Tramore this evening, the Pat Woodbyrne Memorial Handicap Chase, scoring for local connections - trainer John Kiely and owner Conor Lannen.
Ridden by Jonathan Burke, the eleven-year-old gelding raced towards rear and was sixth at the halfway stage.
He was ridden in fourth after the third last, improving to lead two out, keeping on well from there to score by two lengths. Coldstonesober (10/1) ran his usual solid race around Tramore and he finished second under Shane Shortall for John Finn while the 3/1 favourite A Decent Excuse was a further two and a quarter lengths back in third under Paddy Mangan for Eugene O’Sullivan.
John Kiely said afterwards: "Conor (owner) is involved with the Dungarvan hurlers and it is lovely to win at our local track.
"Jonathan gave him a lovely ride. He is pretty good to do what he is told and not put them on their head. There is no point in being too close and not finishing.
"It’s grand to win a local race and my father (Matt Kiely) had his first winners here in 1953.
"He might run well in a big handicap with a lighter weight.”
The winner was recording his eighth career success this evening and he his second of the season having landed a Galway Plate Trial at Limerick last month.
STEWARDS REPORT
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined For A Finish (refused to race) trained by Eoin Doyle, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal. Samples were taken for analysis.
