Paddy Twomey’s stable is flying at the moment off the back of a great Royal Ascot, where Twomey won the Queen’s Vase and had a couple of nice placed efforts. One stable star of his is One Look, who is attempting to break into Group 2 company this season.

  • Where did she start?

One Look won the Goffs Million race on debut, picking up a nice prize pot of €610,000, not a bad sum of money considering connections had only paid € 65,000 for her. She won going away that day, beating the Aiden O’Brien-trained Cherry Blossom by six lengths, who came into that race off the back of a close second in the Lowther Stakes Group 2 at the York Festival.

Therefore, it was no surprise that One Look was thought of as a potential Guineas horse for the next season.

On her next start she won an auction race very easily, but when she stepped into Group company for the first time we finally saw a chink in her armour. She was badly beaten in a Group 3 at Leopardstown. Dropping away tamely inside the final furlong.

    The comeback

Her defeat in a Group 3 was a head-scratching performance and Twomey knew he needed to instil some confidence back into his filly. He entered her in a series of listed races, being beaten in two until finally winning one at Killarney in the summer.

Her confidence had come back, and she followed that victory with a valiant second in a Group 3 in her last start for the season.

This season, Twomey has uncovered the mare that we always knew was there after her easy win in the Goff’s Million on debut. She won a Group 3 at the Curragh on seasonal reappearance, beating the Oak’s runner-up Whirl by roughly five lengths.

She has been tried in two Group 2’s since and was narrowly beaten by the best mare in Ireland in Porta Fortuna, who won four Group Ones last season. Last week, Royal Ascot did not go right for her, and she may be a horse who is better on home soil.
