Patrick Sarsfield lands the odds in some style

Patrick Sarsfield justified prohibitive odds for the O’Brien brothers with a facile success in the Flat Rath Maiden at the Curragh.

The absence of both Alezia (lame) and Simply A Breeze (in season) caused his odds to shorten even further and the Joseph O’Brien-trained colt was sent off the 1/5 favourite.

The son of Australia, placed on both outings last year for Eddie Lynam, was bought at the Newmarket Horses In Training Sales for 230,000 in July and filled the runner-up spot on his first start for current connections at Cork earlier this month.

Donnacha O’Brien, now on the 104 mark for the season and five clear of Colin Keane, can hardly have ridden many easier winners as his mount cruised to the front over a furlong out.

He still sat motionless as the hot-pot drew clear to beat Aisteoir by four lengths with New York Ballet a head further back in third.

Joseph O'Brien said, "Obviously he was a short price and was entitled to win but I was delighted with that and Donnacha was very happy with him.

“He hadn't run for over a year before Cork so he was entitled to come on from it. We think he's a nice horse, and with his rating he was entitled to go and win a race like that.

“My immediate reaction is that would probably be it for the year now but we'll have to speak to the owners and go from there. He'll be a nice horse next year and he should stay further being by Australia.”
