Pippy takes second spot

Pippy, owned by Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen, ran his best race to date when finishing second in the Sterling Service Chauffeurs Maiden Stakes at Folkestone.

The two-year-old colt was the Manchester United and England striker's first runner when he made his debut at Chester last month.

He finished last there and occupied the same position at Carlisle, but showed some ability on this his third start when sent off an 8-1 chance.

The Tom Dascombe-trained youngster put in his best work in the final furlong to take the runner-up spot, five lengths behind the convincing winner Joey's Destiny (7-1).

The performance will have given Rooney heart ahead of England's opening game in Euro 2012 against France in Donetsk later today which he has to sit out, as well as the next match, as he is suspended.

Dascombe tweeted: "We have tried him (Pippy) left-handed and right-handed and now we are trying him in a straight line: Qualified for nursery mark after today."
