Power retired to Coolmore Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Power has been retired from racing and will stand at Coolmore for 2013 it was announced today. One of the best two-year-olds of his generation, Power won the Group 1 National Stakes and the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, and was narrowly beaten by Parish Hall in the Dewhurst Stakes. Power notched up his fifth career success in the Irish 2,000 Guineas when he came from well off the pace to score readily. The only Group 1 winner at both two and three years by leading sire Oasis Dream, Power is a half-brother to Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes winner Thakafaat. His dam, a two-year-old winner over six furlongs herself, is a half-sister to unbeaten 2,000 Guineas winner Footstepsinthesand along with this year’s Group 1 Phoenix Stakes winner Pedro The Great. Trainer Aidan O’Brien paid tribute to the colt saying, “Power is a smashing horse with lots of tactical speed and a great turn of foot. "Unfortunately he sustained an injury at Royal Ascot when a horse came down in front of him and while we thought we’d have him back for an autumn campaign, we’ve just run out of time.” Coolmore's Eddie Fitzpatrick added, “Power was a very talented and early-maturing two-year-old, he’s by a very successful sire and comes from a great family so we’d expect him to sire plenty of good two-year-olds with that extra bit of class. He’s a very welcome addition to the roster.”
