Prescott hoping Gooseberry gamble pays off

Sir Mark Prescott is hoping the gamble of stepping Gooseberry Fool up from an all-weather maiden to Group Three company will have some reward on Thursday.

The daughter of Last Second, whom Prescott saddled to win the Nassau and Sun Chariot Stakes in 1996, leaps from a Kempton success to the Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown, where she takes on Aidan O'Brien's Chesham Stakes winner Maybe.

"On the ratings I've got little chance, but it is a chance for her to get black type and she is beautifully bred," said the Heath House trainer.

"She should be put firmly in her place, but if we could get black type we'd be delighted. There are only six runners, so it's worth a shot.

"Normally Declan McDonogh rides ours but he's claimed, of course, by Mr (Kevin) Prendergast. We've got Pat Smullen and I think he has ridden a winner for me.

"Presumably, Maybe will win and the rest of us will muddle around."

Jim Bolger feels the step up to seven furlongs will suit Somasach.

A winner over the minimum trip on her debut, she disappointed in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot before finishing second over six furlongs in a Group Three at the Curragh.

"I think the seven will suit her well. She's a filly that's improving so we'd be hoping for a good run," Bolger told At The Races.
