Pressure On As Witness Heads For Record

Jockey Felix Coetzee admits he is feeling the weight of expectation in Hong Kong as he prepares to partner Silent Witness to a record-breaking 17 consecutive victories on Sunday.

The Australian-bred six-year-old, trained by Tony Cruz, equalled the mark held jointly by Cigar and Citation in the Chairman´s Sprint Prize earlier this month.

He is set to line up in the Queen´s Silver Jubilee Cup back at Sha Tin, where each of his previous victories have been.

The South African rider, who has ridden him every time, told At The Races: 'I am only human, and the more it goes, the pressure picks up more every time because the bar is always being raised.

'It just comes down to the tactics now and we just need things to go his way.'

Silent Witness´s victories have all come over five or six furlongs, and he will be stepping up to seven for the first time on Sunday.

He also has been drawn unfavourably in stall one, but Coetzee is not too concerned at this stage and will ride him in the same way.

'He has got very good gate speed and we will go out with the intention of leading the race. There is another horse in the race who is a leader, and the worst-case scenario would be following him.

'But we are feeling very confident that he will be able to go to the front and won´t change tactics.'
