Princess Of Wales's Stakes Preview: Five Contenders at Newmarket A field of five runners have been declared for the Group 2 Princess Of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket's July Festival on Thursday afternoon. The mile-and-a-half contest, sponsored by The Kingdom Of Bahrain and carrying a top prize of just over £70,000, has been won in recent times by the likes of Big Orange, Communique, Sir Ron Priestly, Yibir and - most recently - Giavellotto. Charlie Appleby's two wins since 2017 leave him as the active trainer with the best recent record and the Newmarket-based handler saddles two runners this time around. Here's our look at the field for Thursday's Princess Of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket, due off at 3.35pm. El Cordobes (Charlie Appleby / William Buick) A son of Frankel, he had some decent form in the Middle East in the early part of 2025 and won a handicap over this trip on the other track here in May at the Guineas Festival off a mark of 100. Held since in Group 3/Listed races at Newbury and York - latterly over 1m6f - he needs more but gets the nod from William Buick. Ghostwriter (Clive Cox/David Egan) Invincible Spirit colt won 3-3 in 2023 and was a force in Group 1 company last summer, finishing third in the Eclipse at Sandown and the Juddmonte International at York, both behind City Of Troy, while he was only denied two-lengths in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. He had his first go at this trip last month and was third in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot and he trumps these rivals on ratings by 4lb and more. Palladium (John & Thady Gosden/Ryan Moore) German import was set for a campaign over hurdles and he won at Huntingdon on debut for Nicky Henderson in January, but he missed Cheltenham and has reverted to the Flat after a quick move to Team Gosden. Half a length behind Hamish at Goodwood in June and then fourth in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, giving him a length-and-a-quarter to find with Ghostwriter. Wimbledon Hawkeye (James Owen/Sean D Bowen) The only three-year-old in the field, he gets 12lb from his rivals. The Kameko colt showed smart form at two and, while 0-4 this season, he has contested some hot races, including the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket (fifth) and he didn't run badly in fourth last time out in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. The first-time cheekpieces sported there are absent now and he certainly gave indications this trip could suit.
