Nicole McKenna saddled her first track winner when Rattling Jewel obliged over the Derby weekend at the Curragh - and the trainer is eyeing a trip to Galway with him.

The four-year-old gelding relished the six furlongs at Headquarters when prevailing by a nose from in Salutem in the RTE Radio One Handicap.

McKenna, 26, said: "He ran well in Navan and then got into trouble at Down Royal and it all happened a bit quick for him over that sharp five furlongs.

"It was a special day at the Curragh and the extra furlong suited him well.

"I've him entered in Fairyhouse on Sunday and then he could possibly go to Galway as his owner (John O'Mahony) is from Thurles and would like a runner in Ballybrit.

"He has come out of the Curragh very well. He's in good form, is fresh and always gives his best. I would be always hopeful with him."

McKenna worked for her stepfather James Lambe since leaving school and served as his assistant trainer.

She has 10 horses in her stable outside Dungannon, with another few young horses for point-to-points.

The northern handler has had two victories between the flags.

She is also responsible for Sir Ector who won an Ulster Derby for Lambe three years ago.

McKenna said: "He is getting a wee bit older now (nine) but I'm looking at a two-mile race in the Curragh in a fortnight's time for him.

"He is a dual-purpose horse and he could potentially go to Galway as well."
