Red Cadeaux has Melbourne target

Ed Dunlop is eyeing a trip Down Under with Red Cadeaux following his hugely impressive display in Saturday's Curragh Cup.

The five-year-old was a Listed winner at Hamilton earlier in the year and could be considered an unlucky loser when fourth at Pontefract next time.

Stepped up to Group company for the first time over the weekend, Red Cadeaux beat his rivals by nine lengths and more.

His trainer is now hoping he could turn into a Melbourne Cup contender in November.

"I know some of the experts don't think he would have won at Pontefract, but we think he would have done. He was literally knocked over that day," said Dunlop.

"We took a punt and sent him to Ireland a week later and it paid off. I thought he was enormously impressive.

"He stays well and handled the ground well. I think we'll be looking at a couple of races in France for him now, but longer term I think we'll be considering the Melbourne Cup.

"That would be a lot of fun."
