Retirement looms for Madame

Record-breaking mare Madame Jones is likely to be retired to the paddocks in February, trainer David Evans revealed today.

The six-year-old registered her 11th handicap success of the year, from 54 races, at Wolverhampton on Saturday night.

Madame Jones, partnered by 5lb claiming apprentice Fran Ferris, came home a neck winner of the seven-furlong Bet Direct Tax Free Betting Handicap, beating Thaayer and Kinan.

'She`s done it again. I don`t do anything, she keeps herself going. She seems to have improved throughout the year rather than got tired with it. She battled well last night,' said Jones today.

Jamie Spencer was down to ride her last night but he felt unwell and that let in Ferris to win on her for the second time.

And Madame Jones will not be allowed to rest on her laurels.

'She`ll run again next Saturday at Wolverhampton over seven or nine furlongs,' said Jones.

'She`ll keep running up until Christmas or the end of the year. We`ll try and get another win. She`ll probably go to stud in February.

'I`m not sure where she`s going. I think the owner is sorting something out, might be one of Sheikh Mohammed`s deals.'

Saturday`s win was her fourth on Wolverhampton`s Fibresand this year. Her other successes have come at Southwell (four), Nottingham (two) and Yarmouth.

Her 11 wins eclipses the post-1900 record of nine which had been shared by Chaplins Club (1985, 1988), Soaked (1998), Glencroft (1988), Star Rage (1994), Vindaloo (1995), Sihafi (1998) and Nineacres (2000).
