Ridge tumbles to King

Tumbleweed Ridge failed to land the £55,000 Ballycorus Stakes for the fourth successive year at Leopardstown tonight when he was only fourth to King Charlemagne.

The winner, making his seasonal debut, provided champion Irish trainer Aidan O`Brien with yet another big-race success following his Classic double at Epsom last week.

Michael Tebbutt had Tumbleweed Ridge well-placed but the Brian Meehan-trained seven-year-old was a spent force over a furlong out in this Group Three event as One Won One went for home.

Mick Kinane had the move covered on the three-year-old, who cruised into the lead in the last half-furlong to take this seven-furlong prize in impressive fashion.

King Charlemagne (3-1) won by a length and a half from One Won One (9-4) with Social Harmony (6-1) a neck away in third and Tumbleweed Ridge, the 2-1 favourite, another five lengths back in fourth of the five runners.

'No excuses, he had every chance,' said Tebbutt.

The winner could take his chance in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

'He took time to come to hand and is still not fully wound up. He is a fine specimen and the fast ground suited him,' said O`Brien.

'We will look for something over the Irish Derby weekend and then all going well he could go for the Sussex.'
