Rose blooms late in Belgrave

Rose Bonheur came from last to first to run out a dramatic winner of the Belgrave Stakes at Fairyhouse.

Declan McDonogh found himself shuffled to the back of the field early on and the 11/4 favourite had to weave her way between rivals down the straight.

Kevin Prendergast 's charge really started to motor inside the final furlong and found another gear to grab Katla in the closing stages for a half-length success.

The runner-up had travelled well to take it up a furlong-and-a-half out but couldn't hold the late charge of the winner.

"She missed the kicked for some reason today which was surprising," said McDonogh afterwards.

"She got bustled about a bit but they went a nice pace up front and the splits came at the right time.

"I always knew she was getting there. She's a lovely filly."

Fabian Burke, Prendergast's travelling head lad, added:- "She's progressing all the time. There is a Listed race at Naas in ten days for her. She's doing well."

It was a quick double on the card for Prendergast, who had claimed the preceding maiden with Bahama Spirit also carrying the colours of Lady O'Reilly. Santo Padre was the one for money in the Listed contest, backed from 7/1 into 7/2, but failed to figure back in seventh.
