Russell doubles up on Crash

Davy Russell completed a quick double in the Gigginstown colours when Crash held off the late surge of Lambro in the Cashel Maiden Hurdle at Thurles.

Russell had sent his mount to the head of affairs going out on the final circuit but Lambro emerged as a big threat after the second last when travelling well under Paul Townend.

He was asked to chase down his fellow 13/8 joint favourite from the last but just failed to find a way past his rival, going down by short-head at the line to the Michael Hourigan-trained gelding.

The winner was tasting success at the third time of asking over hurdles after a fine third in a hot contest at Naas last time.

"He's a nice horse to look forward to. He has the size and strength to be a chaser," said Hourigan of the winner afterwards.

"He's won a point-to-point, a bumper and now a hurdle. I'd imagine he'll go chasing next season."
