Ryan unleashes smart prospect

We’re all familiar with John Ryan’s prowess as a trainer on the track through the exploits of the likes of Foildubh. Of course ‘points’ followers know him best as the host of the meeting in Templemore and the affable handler unleashed a smart prospect in the shape of Kilcarry Bridge at Bennettsbridge. The son of Balakheri made a successful debut in division two of the Connolly’s Red Mills Maiden for 6yo geldings.

Admittedly the opposition didn’t appear to have much potential for progression, but the Johnny King ridden victor, exhibited all the signs of being a decent prospect, making virtually all, racing with enthusiasm and jumping slickly. He was slow at the last and looked sure to be defeated by the good-looking and well-fancied Rashar gelding, Laser Hawk. However to Kilcarry Bridge’s great credit he pulled out more in the closing stages to triumph by half a length.

There was great excitement at the number one berth afterwards as connections greeted the William Delaney-bred gelding who is out of an unraced sister to Irish Grand National winner, Hear The Echo.

Ryan revealed: “I’m mad about him – there is something special about him. To do what he did here for a newcomer shows that he’s a proper horse.

“We knew he’d run well and he’d win a bumper as he’d be better over shorter. He’s a bonny horse with a big heart.”
