SANDOWN SURVIVES

Jump racing is set to take place at Sandown today for the first time this season.

Officials breathed a sigh of relief when the card came through a second inspection this morning as all the track`s previous four National Hunt cards this term had been lost to the weather.

Heavy rain had threatened today`s valuable televised card, which had come through one inspection on Friday afternoon.

But after a second check this morning clerk of the course Andrew Cooper said: 'We have passed the inspection.

'We had just under 5mm of rain overnight but that wasn`t too much and we are going to give it a go.

'It is very, very testing ground but I think we are OK.'

Today`s card carries over Stg£180,000 in prize money and features numerous trials for the Cheltenham Festival.

Four races due to be shown on Channel 4 include the Grade One Weatherbys Scilly Isles Novices` Chase and the Agfa Hurdle - which sees a clash between leading Smurfit Champion Hurdle hopes Geos and Hors La Loi III.
