San Frontieres wins Princess of Wale's Stakes

Sans Frontieres bounced right back to his best to give Tom Queally yet another big-race success in the Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket.

A promising three-year-old, he was placed in the Craven Stakes and Dante before injury interrupted his Classic campaign.

He showed signs of a return to form at Ascot last time out, but was still sent off at 14-1 to continue the good recent form of Jeremy Noseda.

Tazeez was allowed an easy lead and for a brief spell looked like he might see off the attentions of the likes of Holberg and Spanish Moon.

However, first Redwood and then Sans Frontieres emerged from the pack to fight out the finish, with the latter going clear to win by two and a half lengths, giving Queally a 614-1 double following the 40-1 success of Circumvent earlier on the card.

Queally said: "The last day at Ascot there were signs of improvement and encouragement and that he was getting back on track.

"Today he proved that and travelled strongly in the race.

"I took my time because he can take a bit of a bite early on and I just wanted to get him on an even keel, but he picked up when it mattered and he stayed on all the way to the line.

"He's had his problems in the past, but he's always had talent and he's a class horse who is back on track."

Noseda added: "I can't say I honestly expected this but it's nice to have a pleasant surprise.

"It's been a little while in coming. Sir Robert (Ogden, owner) has been a huge supporter of my stable and it's a while since I've had a decent winner for him so it's a great relief and I'm thrilled for him.

"He was just coming to himself last year but he got an injury which stopped him for the rest of the season and it just took him a bit of time to get him there.

"I didn't have him fit enough first time, then I shouldn't have run him on soft ground next time and then Ascot didn't quite work out.

"We changed a few things up today and it's fallen into place."
