Trainer Pat Shanahan may target Dolce N Karama at the UAE Derby at Meydan in March following the colt's incredible run in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster yesterday.

The son of The Carbon Unit was sent off 200/1 rank outsider of the 11-strong field as he was expected to be totally outclassed after he had finished fourth in a Wolverhampton maiden on his only previous start a month earlier.

However, he ruffled more than a few feathers with a fantastic effort that took him into fourth place behind the impressive winner Kingston Hill and he was only a neck off third place claimed by Altruistic.

"We were all thrilled. We weren't overly surprised because we've always thought a lot of the horse. That's why he was running," said the Co Kilkenny trainer.

"We hoped he would show the potential he shows at home. He's a horse with a lot of ability. I think he will improve a lot over the winter. He's a big shell of a horse.

"He's back home and is in good form. We'll give him a break now and talk it over in January.

"He might go for the UAE Derby in Dubai. The boss [owner, Jimmy Long] lives there so it's his back garden."
