Jockey Shane Crosse has retired from the saddle after a long battle with the scales.

The 21-year-old partnered some 15 Group-race winners including four Group Ones. He was seen to good effect making all on State Of Rest in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes in Royal Ascot last year for Joseph O'Brien, for whom he had a lengthy association with.

Reflecting on his brother's recent retirement from race-riding, jockey Nathan Crosse told RTE: "It is devastating.

"He did give it a little break for a while to come back with a fresh mindset, he gave it his best shot and it is just very unlucky on him that it didn't work out. He fought with it (weight) very hard.

"He was a big input with me, I could ring him and ask him and vice versa. I wouldn't be riding only for him seeing how much fun he was having with it. He's always on the other side of a phone if I need him.

"I don't think he has any plan at the moment, I think he is going to enjoy himself and still ride out in Joseph's. Something will fall into place, he's only 21.

"We are happy that he will be happy. Whatever he does, he will be happy and we will be happy to see him do well."

Shane Crosse was a former champion apprentice jockey in Ireland.
