Alix Balfe rode the second winner of his career aboard Gavin Cromwell's Sights Unseen in the Down Royal Horse Breeders Handicap Hurdle at Downpatrick.

The 13/8 favourite travelled well in contention after three out and was in the lead racing past the bypassed last. She was challenged by Truly Elegant in the straight, but found plenty to sweep home by three lengths from the 11/1 runner-up. True Destiny (7/4) was another length back in third.

Balfe (21) said: "My granda was heavily involved with Gerry (Keane) and these are granda's colours so it is a nice winner to get.

"I'm from Kells and did a bit of point-to-pointing. I just had a conversation with Gavin one day about turning conditional and that's where we ended up.

"Amazing (parents) from driving me up and down the country flapping and point-to-pointing. They are the rock behind this.

"We knew the last day she handled the track, bumped into a good horse in Our Zebo. We fancied her today. When the boys started coming back to me, she dug deep. She's a three miler or thereabouts.

"Fences are on the cards for her in the future, I'd say."

Cromwell also enjoyed a winner on the card through Hills Of Glory in the opening maiden hurdle.

Balfe's first winner was on Macinamillion at Cork in April last year for Cromwell.
