Reverting back to flights after recent efforts over fences, Smallcraftwarning landed a gamble in the Bulmers Zero Handicap Hurdle.

On just his third start for John Ryan, the Gale Force Ten eight-year-old was available at 16/1 in early shows for this extended two-mile heat, but came in for sustained market support and was eventually returned favourite at 7/2.

Settled in mid-division by Liam McKenna, the 91-rated victor made progress approaching the straight and was soon short of room.

Getting the desired gap before two out, he was pushed along to lead shortly after that flight and was ridden clear on the run-in, coming home three-lengths to the good in the colours of the We Win Farming Syndicate.

Top-weight Grandpa Ger (9/1) finished a gallant second, while the in-foal Onebrightbluerose (9/2) was another four-and-three-quarters of a length back in third.

"It is a new syndicate, who are a lovely group and are from Cork and Galway," Ryan commented.

"He's not going to go to Cheltenham or anything but he'll improve away and will find his level."

STEWARDS REPORT

The Raceday Stewards fined John Patrick Ryan, trainer, E65, for failing to fit a tongue tie to Smallcraftwarning, prior to entering the parade ring.
