Trainer Stuart Williams hopes the appointment of Pat Smullen can tip the scales of fortune in Eton Rifles' favour in Saturday's Winning Express Achilles Stakes at Haydock.

The veteran was unable to make an impact in the Duke Of York but, prior to that, collected a Listed prize in France.

Williams said: "It's a very competitive race, but then they all are. If this was a Group Three or a Group Two I don't think it would look any different.

"We're very pleased with our horse, he's in good form and good condition.

"He ran well to a point at York last time before backing out of it, but that was a very good race - the first and second (Maarek and Astaire) were Group One winners.

"He's been fine since and the ground will suit him. We've got a first-class jockey on board in Pat Smullen, so we'll hope for the best."
